Mount Alexander Animal Welfare Shelter (MAAW) is a dedicated organization focused on rehoming rescue pets and promoting animal welfare in the Mt Alexander Shire and beyond. Our team of passionate and qualified staff, along with volunteers, operate MAAW’s animal shelter and Op Shop Empawrium. We collaborate with the community to support various initiatives that enhance the welfare of native wildlife and domestic animals. As a registered incorporated association governed by an elected committee, we are committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for our sheltered animals.
Founded in response to the closure of the Castlemaine Animal Shelter by the RSPCA, MAAW quickly mobilized to take over the facility’s operations. Through fundraising efforts at our Op Shop Empawrium, we were able to purchase the shelter and initiate the construction of a new cattery to meet regulatory standards. Our commitment to animal welfare is further demonstrated by securing a tender to operate the Mt Alexander Shire Council pound, ensuring a stable income to support our shelter’s operations. With ongoing projects aimed at improving our facilities, such as asset fire protection, drainage upgrades, and enhanced kennels, we rely on the generosity of our community and the success of our Op Shop to fund these essential initiatives.
By visiting our shop at 12 Johnstone Street Castlemaine, you not only discover unique treasures but also contribute to the betterment of our shelter and the animals under our care. With a dedicated team of individuals, including our President, Secretary, Vice President, Treasurer, and other committee members, along with shelter and Op Shop staff, we strive to create a warm and welcoming environment for both animals and visitors. Join us in our mission to provide a loving and secure home for rescue pets while promoting animal welfare in our community and beyond.
