Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital is a renowned facility dedicated to providing lifesaving treatment to injured and orphaned wildlife in Australia. With a grand total of 120,000 patients admitted, the hospital plays a crucial role in saving the country’s native species from the threats they face, such as road traffic accidents, domestic animal attacks, and land clearing. Equipped with state-of-the-art facilities including a surgical theatre, x-ray room, and intensive care units, the hospital is staffed by a dedicated team of wildlife veterinarians and nurses who work tirelessly to rehabilitate and release animals back into the wild.
Founded by Steve and Terri Irwin in memory of Steve’s mother, Lyn Irwin, a pioneer in wildlife care, the hospital has grown from a small avocado packing shed to one of the world’s largest purpose-built wildlife hospitals. Since its inception, between 9,000 and 10,000 animals are brought to the hospital annually for specialized care, with no cost to the public. The hospital’s mission is to ensure that no injured wildlife is turned away, regardless of the species or size of the patient. Through generous support from the Queensland Government, Sunshine Coast Council, and Wildlife Warriors, the hospital continues to provide essential care to Australia’s beloved wildlife.
